  1. Hi Lee,

Question about grain dryer: We have a Caldwell 28 inch (ILCH28) propane inline (behind the fan) low-temp heater. Hasn't been used in years.

We tried firing it yesterday, it almost seems to work. It will run through a purge cycle for about half a minute, then open the fuel valve and put on the ignition light. After about 5 seconds it seems to just give up - the ignition light goes off and no flame. I can see pressure on the gauge (which drops once it gives up). It won't try to light again unless I cycle power to it.

Any ideas on what could be broken? What could I check?

    Thanks!

    Mike

First check to see if there is any spark as soon as the purge cycle comes on. It could be any thing from a bad ignitor(spark plug) to the ignition wire or the ignition transformer. IF the burner lites and goes off after a few seconds it is most likely the flame probe or the wires to the flame probe (Rodents seem to find wires very tasty). Your safety circuit is working, as the purge light is on. I can also provide you with caldwell part numbers if you need them.

Thanks for reading my grain dryer repair blog

  3. i a have vertec 5600 and i need some advice on how to convert to propane from natural gas

  4. Jerald, do you mean Liquid Propane or will you attempt to operate it in a warm climate on propane vapors. In the upper states and Canada we need to use L.P. (Liquid Propne) to be able to provide enough BTU's to get the plenium temperature to an operable level. Do you know if you have a Maxxon burner or a Vertec burner?. As a general rule the pipe train and orfices are smaller than on natural gas. If we are converting to L.P. we will need a vaporizer, a vapor high limit switch, a liquid solenoid, pressure relief valve, liquid shut off valve, fuel strainer and a few fittings and lines. As you can see there is more to this conversion than just hooking up a line. Most manufactures offer a conversion kit. I suggest you contact a nearby dealer to help with this project. If you are unable to find a nearby dealer just drop me an e-mail graindryerguru@gmail.com
    Thanks for the great question

  5. Hi Lee

We're happy to find your page!
We live in Hungary(Eastern Europe), and going to buy a portable grain dryer. We have a chance to buy a used Neco 1260, or a Delux dryer.
We don't have any experience, so write us please, which dryer works better( energy consumption, dry grain quality...)
Please answer as fast as you can, we must make a decision!

    Best Regards

    Tibor

  7. Hi I am a smaller farmer would be drying 40-60k bu per year, I have a JLCO 3T/16 that I own but have not set up yet, I also know where I can get an American dry about the same size, I have both single and 3 phase power available, I have a good knowledge of electrical and the mechanical parts of a dryer but very little on the propane part, I have the operators manual for the JLCO dryer but a mouse ate the center out of the wiring diagram so and cant seem to find a diagram any where every one I talk to tells me the JLCO is inefficient and junk but the neighbor that had it before me, since new, said it was a very good dryer, any ideas on which way to go or should I look for a small continuous flow dryer vs an auto batch

  8. What would cause an ignitor to form a carbon hair/bridge between electrode points? Sukup heater if it makes a difference. Thanks!

  9. Hi, I have a small 8 foot long Vertec drier similar to a 3600 but older. I bought it used and can't get the flame to stay lit.. I have checked the air switch and it seems to work. It will light at low fan speed and go out at full speed. I did get to run for 1 hour after a difficult start. Now I can't!

  10. Do you know what size orfices ( hole size in the orfuce) were used in a vertec dryer on propane using the vertec circle burner . We bought a dryer on natural gas then bought another vertec dryer for the propane valve train and burner as well as additional teirs . The orfice that it mentions in the manual are missing .

  17. Hi Lee, I have a caldwell axial flow fan and burner. I am having trouble getting the burner to cycle correctly as it starts and then won't re-ignite unless I have the pressure turned way up. Then it will fire a smaller flame for about 30-40 seconds and then kick in with a bigger flame. It will not fire at all with the pressure set at where it should be. I have replaced the regulator and the solenoids but nothing seems to help. Any ideas? thanks, Mark.
